Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge: A New Life

The first urban National Wildlife Refuge to be chartered in the United States, the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge has been a major player in preserving the indigenous wildlife of the Bay Area since its establishment in 1974. Named in honor of the Congressman who tirelessly worked to secure funding for the land purchase, the park is now a popular destination for visitors who enjoy the range of activities provided. The most popular thing to do here is to walk along the many miles of trails and try to spot animals living in the preserve. It plays host to a range of migratory birds, including white pelicans, ospreys, eagles, kites, and hawks. Other endangered animals use the refuge as a habitat as well, including the salt marsh harvest mouse. An interesting use of the land has been granted to Cargill Salt, which uses the marsh’s natural salt ponds to concentrate brines and create salt entirely by solar power.

Mission San Jose: History Comes Alive

One of the ways that Spain laid their claim on the California territory was by exporting Christianity to the native Americans. To provide these new converts a place of worship, settlers built a number of gorgeous Spanish-style missions throughout the state. Mission San Jose was the fourteenth such mission to be completed, and it remains a popular place for worship to this day. Mass is held every weekday morning at 8 a.m, leaving the rest of the day open for tours and other special events. The building and attached graveyard are absolutely beautiful, providing a serene place to rest and reflect. A number of interesting historical exhibits are scattered through the mission, shining light on what early life in the area was like. The mission also hosts a number of concerts of vocal music throughout the year, including a very popular choral Christmas presentation. It’s a must-visit.

Niles Essany Silent Film Museum: Quiet Please

We all know that California is the locus of movie production in America, but Hollywood wasn’t the only place that movie magic was made. Fremont, California is host to the Niles Essany Silent Film Museum, a repository of tons of fascinating memorabilia and artifacts from the days before sound. Housed in a historic theater that screened films by many of the stars of the day, including Charlie Chaplin and Bronco Billy Anderson, the Niles Essany Silent Film Museum is a fascinating trip back to a simpler time in entertainment. The museum is filled with props from silent classics as well as cameras, projectors, and other machines. But one of the biggest draws is their film collection, which boasts over 9,000 individual entries. Every Saturday night, the museum hosts screenings of silent films with live piano accompaniment for just five dollars. Some complain that the wooden seats are a little uncomfortable, so bring a cushion.
